10. RESOLUTION - 2013-2014 SCHOOL YEAR CALENDAR

Minutes

Board will need to decide action after details heard -

Once calamity day bill went through the house and senate and both agreed and passed it, It went to governor's desk. At that point agencies began sending out instructions explaining steps that need to be taken. Mr. Stefanik said it is not law until it is signed by the Governor, and at this time it has not been signed by the Governor. In that bill, school districts are permitted to revise contingency plan. This resolution once decided upon will allow the district to revise the contingency plan. By approving this resolution the district is accepting the 4 additional days being offered by the state and will go from 5 waiver days to 9 waiver days.

* This resolution goes into effect contingent on the Governor signing the bill and it goes into law.

11. RESOLUTION - 2014-2015 SCHOOL YEAR CALENDAR

Approve a resolution recognizing that the 2014-2015 school calendar has a reduced number of hours schools are open for instruction when compared to the 2013-2014 school calendar.  The reduction is due to the following reasons:  the 2013-2014 school calendar was revised and 2 holidays were changed to school days (result:  added 2 days of instruction to the school calendar); and, the 2014-2015 school calendar has a different configuration of Professional Development Days and Early Release Days.

NOTE:  The 2014-2015 school calendar has more hours when the schools are open for instruction when compared to the actual hours when schools were open for instruction in the 2013-2014 school year.

Minutes

days to hours - it said that if the school year had less student contact hours next year than there was this year a resolution had to be approved saying the Board of Educaiton recognized  the reduction in contact hours and approved it.

The law states that it is not comparing the actual days in school, it is a count of the days scheduled to be in school. Because Galion School District added two school days to the calendar in the 2013-2014 school year by adding Easter Monday and President's Day back into the school  year to make up for calamity days, the school calendar for 2013-3014 now has 2 more days in the schedule than what is in the 2014-2015 school year calendar.

Board is aware of the difference and approves the 2014-2015 calendar as it stands.
