Final Release of Building and District State Report Card
Minutes
Mr. Long thanked the members of the staff for coming. He discussed the 3rd grade reading guarantee and turned the conversation over to Dr. Powell. She stated that we had 12 people that qualify at this time. We are waiting for the state to announce what individual trainings will count toward the endorsement such as reading first, siri, etc. Changes have been occurring almost weekly and staff is doing a good job communicating about it. Some of the pieces of the original proposal have been changed - we are trying to stay informed and stay on top of it. We are hoping many of our teachers that have the additional reading program trainings will be qualified. Criteria -Masters in Reading, Masters in Literacy, Literacy endorsements - 2 years of above value added in reading. Next year the guarantee goes from Kindergarten through 3rd grade.
Mr Long asked if we would be moving students to teachers, or changing teachers classrooms.
Dr. Jenney stated that either could be possible, she addressed that we already have master teachers. She is hopeful that the state mandate will make appropriate changes in the legislation so this is more practicle for all districts but primarily the smaller districts.
Sue gave a brief description of the OEA stand on the legislation and also commended Galion staff for taking measures needed to meet this political requirement.
Mr. Long spoke of a meeting Thursday night at 6:15 at Temple Israel on Rt. 95 - a Town Hall meeting put on by the League of Women Voters with the state legislative people and invited the staff in attendance to attend or send their topic points.
Sue spoke of value added portion may be removed as a criteria, Dr. Powell said there is no value added until 4th grade.
Legislators will pull files to see what was in it when a meeting comes up. Letters written go into these files - the more the better.
Mr. Long closed the topic again addressing teachers to sent talking points for him to carry to the meeting if they are unable to attend.
Levy:
Contest for Levy logo - student entries built off of the One to One theme - narrowed to three that were presented from Mrs. Wilson's graphic Arts class- we had a donation of cash prize to give to winning student.
Attendee asked if community knows about mandate for students to test on computers and textbooks going to on-line.
Dr. Jenney asked the Board to take a leadership role in raising funds, print materials, logo design, chair speaking engagements for events,
Chair of finances - Bob Zeisler - Brian will be on the committee
Chair of Print Materials/Communications - George McElligott & Jennifer Kuns
Speaking Engagements - Dennis Long & Brian Owens
